Though important, forage quality often receives far less consideration than it deserves. Adequate animal nutrition is essential for high rates of gain, ample milk production, efficient reproduction, and adequate profits. Producing suitable quality forages for a given situation (either for harvesting or pasturing) requires knowing the factors (including effective fertility programs) that affect forage quality, then exercising management accordingly.
Fertilization of grasses with nitrogen (N) often substantially increases yield and in most cases even the CP (Crude Protein) levels in most forages. However, fertilization usually has no effect on digestibility. Fertilizing alfalfa and other lugumes with nitrogen to improve quality is not recommended. In fact fertilization with phosphorus (P), potassium (K), or other commercial fertilizers may actually decrease the the forage quality when growth is rapid.
AgriGro® has been increasing yields and increasing plant quality for the last 37 years. By improving the biological balance of the soil through increased microbial activity, AgriGro® products (products such as IgniteS2®, FoliarBlend®, and Ultra®) have been able to increase the plants ability to uptake nutrients more efficiently providing the plants a stronger defense against disease causing pathogens. AgriCal® has also been able to help break down insoluble calcium making it and other nutrients immediately available for the plants uptake thus improving the quality of the forage crop.
